Concept
The design vision for the Bernheim Educational Facility is rooted in creating a learning environment that is immersive, inspiring, and deeply connected to the natural landscape. The goal is to support educators and engage visitors while honoring the rich history of the arboretum. The concept draws from Bernheim’s guiding principle of fostering a meaningful relationship between people and nature—using architecture and interiors as tools for discovery, reflection, and environmental awareness.
Process & Design Execution
The existing Visitor Center includes the Isaac Café, a nature-inspired retail shop, administrative offices, and public restrooms. Reimagining this space as an education-focused hub requires careful attention to circulation, flexibility, and storytelling. The design approach prioritizes warm, natural materials, expansive views to the surrounding forest, and a palette inspired by the region’s flora and seasonal changes. Interactive zones, adaptable teaching areas, and integrated display elements support hands-on learning and reinforce the park’s mission.
One of the primary challenges is transforming a visitor-oriented footprint into a highly functional educational facility without losing the welcoming atmosphere of the original center. Thoughtful zoning, improved wayfinding, and the introduction of nature-driven textures and finishes help bridge this transition—creating a space that feels both purposeful and inviting.
Isaac Bernheim’s legacy serves as a constant reference point. His dedication to sharing the arboretum with Kentuckians and visitors nationwide informs the project’s emphasis on accessibility, environmental sensitivity, and celebration of place. The design aims to honor his vision by creating a facility that educates, inspires, and strengthens the connection between people and the natural world.
